If you’re using a limited data plan or travelling, you can reduce how much mobile data your iPhone uses by adjusting a few settings.
Turn on Low Data Mode
Open Settings.
Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular).
Tap Mobile Data Options.
Turn on Low Data Mode.
Low Data Mode helps reduce background network activity, such as automatic updates and app refresh.
Manage Background App Refresh
Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
Select Wi-Fi or Off to stop apps from using mobile data when they’re not active.
Restrict Data for Specific Apps
Go to Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular).
Scroll down to see which apps are using mobile data.
Turn off the toggle for any app you don’t want using mobile data.
Turn Off Wi-Fi Assist
Wi-Fi Assist automatically switches to mobile data when your Wi-Fi signal is weak.
Open Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular).
Scroll to the bottom and turn off Wi-Fi Assist.
Update Apps Using Wi-Fi Only
Go to Settings → App Store.
Under Mobile Data, turn off Automatic Downloads or select Wi-Fi only.
Notes
You can turn on Low Data Mode for both mobile data and Wi-Fi separately.
Limiting background data helps you stay within your plan allowance and can also improve battery life.
