If you’re on a limited data plan or travelling, you can reduce how much mobile data your Android device uses by changing a few settings.
Turn on Data Saver
Open Settings.
Tap Network & Internet (or Connections on Samsung devices).
Select Data Saver.
Turn on Use Data Saver.
Data Saver limits background data usage for most apps and helps you stay within your data allowance.
Restrict Background Data for Specific Apps
Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Data usage → Mobile data usage.
Select an app from the list.
Turn off Background data to prevent that app from using mobile data when not active.
Disable Auto-Updates on Google Play
Open the Google Play Store.
Tap your profile icon → Settings → Network preferences → Auto-update apps.
Select Over Wi-Fi only or Don’t auto-update apps.
Limit Data Use in System Apps
Open Settings → Network & Internet → Data usage.
Tap Data warning & limit (or Billing cycle and data warning).
Turn on Set data warning or Set data limit and enter your preferred amount.
Turn Off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Scanning
Go to Settings → Location → Location services.
Tap Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning.
Turn both off to reduce background network activity.
Notes
Menu names may vary depending on your phone brand and Android version.
Using Data Saver and restricting background data can significantly extend your plan’s data allowance and improve battery life.
